New Principal Profile: Dr. Landon Nelson, Principal of Risley Middle School

Where did you get your degree(s)?
 
College of Coastal Georgia, Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Troy State University, Valdosta State University
 
Where have you taught?
 
I was a teacher and coach for 15 years before moving into administration. I taught at Brunswick High School (2004-2007), Brantley County High School (2007-2011), and Glynn Academy (2011-2019).
 
When did you first know you wanted to be an educator?
 
When I was 13, I helped coach my brother's baseball team.  At that point, I knew I wanted to teach social studies and coach baseball.  
 
What inspired you to become a principal?
 
I wanted to have the ability to help students progress academically, athletically, socially, and emotionally.   
 
What is your own vision/mission for the school under your leadership?
 
We will be a school of academic growth and rigor.
 
What most impresses you about your students and Glynn County Schools?
 
Maybe not what impresses me the most, but what I enjoy the most is watching my students progress academically and watching the joy they receive as they see and feel the progression.  What impresses me the most about the Glynn County Schools is how we take such a diverse population and all work together for the betterment of our kids.
 
What are your expectations for not only your staff and students but yourself as well?
 
In the words of Nick Saban, "Do your job at a high level."
 
What does student success look like for you?
 
When students not only grow academically, but they enjoy the process and can relate the information to their life outside of school.   
 
Outside of school, where might students, parents or staff members run into you?
 
At the ballpark, classic car show, or church.
