You should create an actual book/scrapbook - if you are at home or if you check with me and get permission to create an all-typed Autobiography, please use the Google Doc attached here.

In class, students will complete their bellwork, their 5/5 Trouble Narratives (Test Grade), a Commonlit Assignment, and any other missing work.
They will also watch Zathura the last 15 minutes as a reward and as a narrative example.
Finally, I am also posting the directions for the final Autobiography project that will be due on 5/20 - a test grade and quiz grades, so that students can get a head start on this if it helps them.  Thank you!

1) make sure you have finished your Trouble Narrative from last week!  Go to Google Classroom - Classwork - Graded Assignment Trouble Narrative and type your story on the Google Doc wit your name.
2) Review your Memoir from the fall and start reflecting on your school year. Begin working to compose a final Autobiography web.  We are going to do updated identity web posters in class.

Students will participate in a read aloud of Chris Allsburg, will answer comprehension questions in writing, and will explore how authors incorporate scientific information into their writing.  They will then research a scientific article using the attached website from NASA and will write a story using details from their research.

Hello!  Students will practice reading two different articles about the circus and comparing/contrasting.  They will also complete an inference worksheet.  Students will do this after practicing for the Extended essay or if they need to work on paper instead of the computer.  Thanks!

Hello!  We will be reading an article together and then writing a response.
Students will then go online to complete the multiple choice questions for a Teenbiz.
For make up work, students should complete a 5-step Teenbiz and should complete the Thought question.  They can choose which article to complete.

Students have been doing great with their lessons from the Test Prep unit.  We have studied word choice and tone, but it has been a while - this is from the released Milestone, and I just want students to have a chance to review writing about word choice and tone in case there is a question where they have to do this on the Milestone - I want them to feel confident and prepared, not frustrated and confused.

I will help students with this lesson in class today.  If you are at home working on it, please let me know if you have any questions.

We will complete a Quizzizz of review questions as well and will finish the "Closure before Darknesss" writing.

2) Read the Mentor Text "Closure in the Darkeness" and write the answers.

Gimkit Practice of Greek and Latin Roots

1) Students will practice using ellipses and dashes to show a pause - and using ellipses to omit words (I am printing out the Quizizz assignments and going over these with the students to help them build confidence before they take the quizizz (Daily 5 - this will be a little bit longer today)
2) Students will complete the story jumper creative writing assignment as bellwork/journal
3) Students will work on the Workshop for today (Workshop writing will be done in their journal - I am printing those materials and working on getting it organized)
4) Students will view a media clip and analyze narrative techniques

1) Due this week was the Child Soldier Essay (Test grade)
2) Today, students are also learning about Ellipses, completing the attached documents with help in class.
3) Students are then practicing using Quizziz and Gimkit (these are also posted to Google Classroom in a separate link under this week).

Students will complete a workshop helping them strenghthen and develop their flash drafts.
Students will then work on typing up their flash drafts - revising and editing these into final copies.  Sixth block will write the entire essay on paper before typing it up.

Today, students reviewed coordinate adjectives (these need a comma) and non-coordinate adjectives (do not need a comma) by playing a Gimkit.  Then they took this quiz.  Finally, they wrote a flash draft essay on the topic "Do Child Soldiers deserve legal forgiveness (amnesty)?".

*This quiz is significantly easier - I will average the two 
*If you would then like to retake one much similar to the first for a replacement grade, please see me during homeroom
Students will also do a daily edit.
*They will then work on finishing their posters from yesterday.  Students that are finished will begin flash drafting their essay "Should Child Soldiers be given Amnesty?"

Students will take a quiz on Verbals and a second quiz on Coordinate adjectives.  Go to the Quiz class page to access the link.
Then will then work in groups to create a poster for both sides of the topic "Should Child Soldiers be given Amnesty?"

In class today, students completed the second and 3rd pages of their Verbals Practice worksheets. 
They then learned about the topic "Should Child Soldiers be granted Amnesty" while watching an interview with a former child soldier, Ishmael Beah, and a short animated video explaining the topic, as well as reading a Scholastic mentor text.  Students took notes and journaled on the topic "What are child soldiers, what is amnesty, and what are the issues surrounding these topics?"

Students will:
Answer and discuss a Daily 5 - with an infinitive as the direct object
Journal/Daily Writing - Write a cover letter asking the boss Zeus to hire them in the position of a Greek myth character
Watch a video on pros/cons of war, a story of a child soldier, and make a T-chart comparing/contrasting
Finish with a worksheet on verbals (gerunds, participles, and infinitives).

In class, students read and discussed the article.  Together, we wrote a summary, and then students completed a RACER on the topic: What are some of the problems with toy drones?  If students did not do it in class as they were supposed to as part of the lesson, they may complete it on their own for partial credit.  Please write answers on lined paper.

Students completed a paper copy of this with the substitute on Friday.  Please write your answers out on lined paper and turn them in (or print the attached file and complete it).  This is only for students who were absent.

Yesterday, students also read a narrative mentor text "The Three Century Woman" by Richard Peck (it's been a while since we have studied specifically narrative techniques)..  Students then wrote their first podcast flash draft on lined paper.  7th block had enough time to switch papers, read, and give feedback.  On Wednesday, students will work with a partner to write a 2nd podcast flash draft - this can be a completely different topic, or a sequel to the first podcast).  Any student who would rather write along may. do so.  Students will switch their papers and give feedback.  Then, students will use a podcast graphic organizer to further develop and research at least one of the flash drafts.  


The workshop will tie in information from Session 8 "A Celebration of Speeches"

This ties with the Google Slides lesson posted on 3/6.  If absent, please start with the Google Slides presentation.  
On 3/6 Students completed a daily 5, a KWL chart, then listened to a podcast "The Haunting Effects of Sleep Deprivation."  Students were asked to choose the topic for their podcast for homework.  On 3/8, Students will complete this handout on paper and will flash draft their first podcast in their journal.

Connects to the LC Workshop Session 6 - Speeches & Unleashing the Inner Dramatist


In this lesson, students will study podcasts as mentor texts, will analyze them, and will journal about them (daily writing) before choosing their own podcast topic to research.  Students will receive two handouts in class - one that helps them take notes on and analyze the podcasts, and another that helps them brainstorm/choose their topic/and research it.

After completing the Teenbiz lesson, students may study Quizlet cards (also on Google Classroom), do IXL, and/or complete more Teenbiz.  They may also work on Noredink.com

Any student who doesn't want to participate can do IXL - Skill plan and/or write a narrative story of about a page typed on any topic they like - I will help them brainstorm story ideas if they like.


In class, students worked in groups to complete the following and then made posters or virtual presentations (I also have a biography poster graphic organizer but I didn't have a chance to get it uploaded).

In class, students will start with a Parts of Speech Quizizz and will review one of the questions as their Daily 5.
They will then complete this journal OR work on their Essay Test/Argument Essay if they need more time.
Then, they will study the Quia cards at the top of the page under Classwork.

Hi!  Today we are doing IXL the way that we have done it previously in class - Skill Plan - do 3, 10 questions each.  Then, students will choose a TeenBiz and will complete the Thought Question - I will give an example in class.  My 6th block will do this in a more structured manner and will copy the example, underline the different parts with different colors, and will then type their answer.  
*I'm also introducing Quizlet as a study tool - per a conversation I had with Mrs. Moody.  Trying to squeeze it all in.... :-)

1) Go to Clever - Go to the Owl icon that says Writescore.
2) Log in.  Work hard.  The Constructed Response Question should be a long paragraph or two paragraphs. Use RACER but repeat the ACE for both paragraphs.
3) The essay is JUST like we have been practicing in class.  Introduction - Body Paragraph 1 (RACER) - On the other hand Body Paragraph 2 (RACER) - Conclusion  (You may have an 2nd body paragraph for your claim).
4) Please read over, proof, check, and IMPROVE your essay before submitting :-).

This is not officially assigned yet.  On Tuesday, students will do research, find evidence, and will begin drafting.  The entire essay is due Friday.

Today, students are going to work on IXL skills - Log in through Clever, Skill Plan, choose 3 different topics that have not yet been done, and then do 10-20 questions (look up the information, just try - don't pay attention to the score in the orange box.)  If at any point you get frustrated with IXL, STOP :-) - you may do Teenbiz w/ a thought question or Noredink.com instead.  I've attached the scorecard - students will fill out by writing in the topic letter/number when they have completed 10 items.


When finished with IXL today, students will start the social promotion jpurnal.  I will give students an example tomorrow.

Note - after grading these, students need more time to work on them.  We will finish flash drafting on Monday and Tuesday then will continue with our workshops "angling evidence" and then "developing strong conclusions.

1) Make sure you finished your constructed response answer from yesterday - it is due today!
2) Go to the assignment under this - I moved your Violence in Video Games flash draft up and returned any that were turned in.  Read over your flash draft carefully and make six substantial improvements.  Think about our workshops on connotation and using evidence.  Use this to improve your flash draft.  Highlight your substantial improvements yellow!!!!!!

*I am running the Tone in Literature presentation as a PearDeck in class, so that students may type their answers into the slideshow.  If you are doing it at home, you may put your answers on a Google Doc.  (I know how to present the PearDeck in student view, but I don't want to confuse students who are using the other activities attached to this assignment.)
*Also, I am going to have students make free Quia trial accounts so that they can log in and save their work.

After yesterday's lesson, some students are ready to move on.  Others need to finish/review yesterday's lesson.  I will walk through those that need to finish.

2) We will refer to the PPT for our workshop (I am working on Pear Decking the PPT and updating some parts).
3) Go to your 1/22 and 1/23 Violence in Video Game Flash draft.  Make four substantial improvements to the body paragraphs - highlight these blue.  Make sure your evidence is not longer than a sentence.  Make sure you explain the evidence and the main points of the source article in your own words.
4) Complete the attached vocabulary writing link.
5) Work on IXL - 3 topics, 10 questions each OR complete a Teenbiz article.

1) Please go to IXL - Skill Plan, and complete at least 30 questions.  Fill out your score card and turn it in.

2) Then complete the questions for the article "Can Video Games Teach" on Teenbiz.
3) Watch the video - Edpuzzle Argument Writing.  Make sure you answer the questions for each section.


**If you want to finish your Violence in Video Game flash draft essay, you may....but you will either need to 1) make up this work on your own or 2) be working steadily and quietly through the end of class - throughout the nine weeks I will award 2 "drop scores" cards - but you may not earn this if you are goofing off or if you pack up early. 

We will play Gimkit next week, on 1/18, and you can earn a quiz grade.  


We will have some time to study these in class, but I am also posting these here in case it is helpful.

The attached teacher video has a lot of information from the lesson in class.  On the second half I mention a book - Patton by Carlo D'Este, and I mention my grandfather, Brigadier General Ernest J. White - I've shown the website from the Air Force before- when I discuss Identity maps and how to continue to use them as a reference.  I forgot to present the screen during that section pf the video!

Easier directions:  Delete the directions on your document.
Write a "story report" like a book report about either of the stories.  Try to include the theme of the story.

This video is really terrible!  Just posting it in case it helps anyone.


The most important thing for today's lesson is to think and write thoughtfully about the characters, setting, plot events, figurative language, and any other details about the story.  Then write thoughtfully about how these help to develop the author's intended message, the theme.


I included some ppts from our Workshops to help you think about theme and decide how to frame your writing.  I will also post examples of written answers later today, in case that helps.

Hello!  Yesterday, we did the Daily 5, then the song/themes, and then started deconstructing "All Summer in a Day" with annotations.


Today, students will work on the journal - and will do a little more - they will write most of the class but will also work with partners throughout.  I made another video for today that explains more.

We launched our Lucy Calkins Investigative Journalism unit this week and the students are really getting into recording the 5 W's and observing small moments of drama (positive drama with positive messages ;-).  Many of the students are really excited about the possibility of doing a school newspaper, so I am including this as an authentic task correlating with the unit.

If you pass this, you do not have to retake it.  If you fail it, you will study and retake it Thursday. :-)

The Bill of Rights were laws added to the constitution.  They gave all the people in the country certain rights.  The government can’t just do what they want.  In countries with kings and queens, and dictators, those rulers would just do what they want.  The Bill of Rights is important because it gives the American people certain rights.  The government has limits.
